newborn care specialist
A Newborn Care Specialist (NCS) is a highly trained and experienced newborn care provider.
As you plan for the arrival of your baby, you might be considering the support of a Newborn Care Specialist. Whether you’re birthing your babe, receiving via surrogate, or adopting, you may desire expert care and education for your newborn.
The focus of a Newborn Care Specialist is…
The focus of a NCS is usually the first 4 months of a baby's life, but often extends beyond. As an NCS, I am charged with supporting you to achieve your goals. Most of the time, that means establishing healthy sleep hygiene and conditioning for baby so they are sleeping 10-12 hours with night feeding(s) by about 12 weeks of age. I am also a certified pediatric sleep consultant, so am an expert in newborn sleep shaping.
In addition to establishing your baby’s sleep routine, I also provide guidance on nursery set-up, registry items and ordering baby gear supplies.
It can be overwhelming to make decisions on what you actually “need”, so having expert recommendations on making purchases is very useful.

I often get asked what the difference is between the postpartum care providers. In order for you to decide what provider is best for your family, you need to understand the unique distinctions. One of the main differences is level of education/ training and experience. As highlighted above, a Newborn Care Specialist has taken advanced trainings and has specialized skills caring for a newborn. A nanny or “night nanny” generally has less training and more general childcare experience. A nanny usually follows the care plan directed by the parents, whereas an NCS creates the plan with or for the parents.
There are no set training requirements for nannies, whereas an NCS or postpartum doula does. A postpartum doula also completes training as a postpartum care provider, but the focus is slightly different. While an NCS usually focuses more on direct newborn care and parent education, a postpartum doula supports the entire family through birth recovery, healing and adjusting to life with baby.
