Babywearing 101: Tips for a Safe and Comfy Carry

Babywearing is a fantastic tool for keeping your little one close while freeing up your hands to make meals, fold laundry, tend to older siblings or pets, etc. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just getting started, these tips will help you adjust to a safe fit, stay comfortable, and make babywearing part of your routine.

Research indicates that babywearing offers several benefits for both infants and caregivers, though it's essential to practice it safely to minimize potential risks.

Benefits of Babywearing

  • Enhanced Bonding and Reduced Crying: The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that carrying your baby close can strengthen your emotional connection and may lead to decreased infant crying.

  • Improved Breastfeeding Rates: Studies suggest that ergonomic babywearing can support increased breastfeeding success at six months of age.

  • Positive Impact on Infant Development: Babywearing can promote better sleep organization and may reduce maternal postpartum depressive symptoms.

1. Choose the Right Carrier for You

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to baby carriers. The best carrier is the one that fits your body, supports your baby’s age and stage, and feels good to wear. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Wraps – Great for newborn snuggles and a custom fit.

  • Ring Slings – Perfect for quick up-and-down carries.

  • Soft Structured Carriers (SSC) – Ideal for ergonomic support and longer wear.

  • Meh Dais – A versatile mix of wraps and SSCs.

2. Pay Attention to Safety Rules

You need to ensure proper usage to prevent suffocation risks and fall-related injuries. To maximize benefits and minimize risks, always follow the manufacturer's guidelines for your specific carrier and adhere to established safety practices, such as the T.I.C.K.S. rule:

  • Tight – Keep your baby snug and secure.

  • In view at all times – Always see their face.

  • Close enough to kiss – Their head should be within kissing distance.

  • Keep chin off chest – Ensure an open airway.

  • Supported back – Maintain a natural spine curve.

3. Find the Right Fit for Comfort

A well-fitted carrier should distribute your baby’s weight evenly. Keep these in mind:

  • Position baby high and tight (think: “close enough to kiss”).

  • Spread the fabric or straps to avoid pressure points.

  • Adjust the waistband snugly to support your lower back.

Find a local babywearing educator or consultant if you want to invest in a private lesson on babywearing. They will often have a library of various carriers for you to try, and help you decide which type of carrier is best for your height and body stature.

4. Dress for Success

Babywearing can get warm, so dress you and baby in light, breathable layers. Watch out for overheating, especially in warm climates.

It’s okay to get sweaty, especially on longer walks. You’ll wash your carrier regularly.

5. Practice Makes Perfect

Try out your carrier at home first before taking it out and about. Use a mirror or have a partner help check for fit and positioning.

Start slow and easy. As your body adjusts to babywearing, switch up carries, stretch and give yourself time to rest when you need.

And pay attention to baby’s feedback too! If baby seems fussy, check their positioning, adjust for comfort, and try again. Every baby (and parent!) has preferences, so be patient and flexible.

It’s also perfectly normal for two different parents or caregivers to have two separate carriers. For example, a 6’2” dad and a 5’4” mom may prefer two different carriers altogether.

Embrace the Bond!

Beyond convenience, babywearing nurtures a strong connection between you and your little one. Enjoy those snuggles, breathe them in, and soak up every moment!
